Typical schedule: Weekdays between 8am & 4pm, with occasional evening and weekend events. Minimum of 10 hours/week, and can be increased (up to 35 hrs/week) to meet internship requirements.
Description
The Duluth Community Garden Program (DCGP) strives to cultivate healthy neighborhoods by providing access to land, resources, and community. DCGP accomplishes this by renting community garden plots out on a sliding fee scale at 21 locations across the city. DCGP provides gardening related education, lends out gardening equipment and resources, hosts and promotes community events, and mobilizes community members around food justice issues and advocacy. Our internships are “build your own” and can be developed to fit the needs and interests of applicants from a variety of fields. This is a list of potential internship tasks.
Community Outreach & Promotion
Update spreadsheets of gardener and volunteer information
Develop promotional and outreach materials including a DCGP newsletter
Manage DCGP Facebook page and website
Assist with DCGP events: Plant and Seed Sale (May), Garlic Sale (Fall), and Harvest Dinner (Fall)
Table at community events and farmers markets
Recruit community and gardener volunteers
Land Stewardship
Maintain garden common areas
Build garden infrastructure
Tend to perennials in garden common areas
Operate small motorized tools (tillers, mowers, weedwackers)
Education & Advocacy
Support One Vegetable One Community (OVOC) program with school-based lessons
Plan and facilitate regular gardening education workshops
Research and address the needs of those most impacted by food access injustices
Support gardener information sessions
Program Development
Research potential funding sources (grants, donations, etc.)
Assist with grant-writing and reporting
Support organizational fundraising efforts including events and community sponsorships
Collect and evaluate program data
Qualifications
Flexible, able to work around variable weather, special events (changing schedules), and willing to do a wide range of tasks.
Motivated and able to work independently.
Effective communicators
Open-minded and eager to learn new skills and try new things.
Able to get to gardens across the city of Duluth, potentially multiple locations in one day of work.
Able to show proof of a valid Driver’s License
Preferred, but not required:
Able to lift, bend over, and move around rough terrain
Comfort in the outdoors
Pursuing an education in one or more of the following fields: Environment, Sustainability & Geography, Public Health, Social Work, Marketing, Communications, and Agriculture
